Re/Inter-view: Pink Frost Returns with New Minds

Labels... who needs em? People get too wrapped up in wanting to label the sound a band creates and I'd rather not. Especially when you have a band like Pink Frost ripping and roaring in your ear as Adam Lukas' vocals permeate throughout the album, creating a rugged yet cleaner and focused sound after a 4 year break. New Minds is a energetic, heavy yet dark album that keeps you going the entire damn time. It keep pushing in your ear till you just let it take over and the guitar beats you senseless as the vocals wrap around your head, let it. I came across their Sundowning album this year for the first time and was fully enjoying Ruins, Orange Sky Suicide and Dead Cities to name a few, so New Minds came to me at the perfect time.

Now having completed a few listens of New Minds, I can safely say that I do enjoy their harder hitting songs which is most this album and Bare Roots hits that spot in my Black Sabbath heart that I cannot ignore. It has that great droning and wailing guitar slow-down that makes you want to just take a break from whatever you're doing and space out for a few. You can feel the wind hitting you in Circles as the drums create this aural stomp while the melodic space of HeadlightsMirror Maze and We No Time settle you down from that high to end it on a slower note. I love bands like this where it takes you to another dimension and is about the music, not some gimmick or fad but exploration in sound.

Now that we got to share what the new album feels like,
let's talk to vocalist/guitarist Adam Lukas of
Pink Frost!

Welcome back boys and thanks for releasing yet another album that continues to explore sound! It's truly great and I'm sure it'll also be a great gift to existing fans as well as all the new fans you'll gain in your journey.

Aside from the 4 year break and its reason, what learnings resonated with band after the release of Sundowning (2013) and remaster of Gargoyle Days (2015) that may have impacted New Minds? 
A lot has happened since Sundowning, but there is no real reason for the delay. 
We actually recorded the basic tracks for New Minds quite a while back, so we had the chance to live with the tunes for a while and really experiment with things. Adding a harmony here or a fuzzed out guitar there. Searching for days for the perfect reverb. Having a bit of detachment from the original sessions really helped us look at the songs dispassionately and focus on the dynamics of each song without the prejudice of performance or ego getting the way. In some ways it was like working with a different band. There were no deadlines set, so we could let the songs evolve and grow until they felt fully realized.

Time is best when creating so that's great you guys were able to sit with the tracks for a bit! Sometimes you just need to step back. When writing and rehearsing new songs, do you guys have anything in particular that gets you "in the zone" when in the creative state?
All the drugs mostly and maybe some practice.

HAHA! Gotta get there somehow eh? As I listened to New Minds at the end of the day, it served as a soundtrack of sort. Is there a certain feel that you guys were going for in this album?
Not consciously, but there is a certain underlying cohesion that seems to bind the tunes together. They all relate to and inform each other. It’s probably the thing I’m most proud of with the LP. We explore a lot of moods throughout the record, but it all feels like part of the same whole. A proper album, in an old school way, that makes sense from beginning to end. While sequencing the track order for the LP, it became obvious that there was only one way things could go. Every time we tried to switch up the song order something felt off and we put it back in its proper place. Each song serving a purpose in the puzzle.

Completely agree with the beginning to end feel! Glad to see music cohesion exists and not just tracks that go together. What's going on now that New Minds is finally out in the wild?
Trying to figure it all out at the moment. Hoping to tour and perform as much as possible.

The Tamale Guy will actually come to you at the bar you’re at because it’s 3AM and he will kindly take your last $6 and even though you won’t be able to afford that taxi you were planning to take home, and can’t Uber because you dropped and shattered your phone after doing too many shots, you will still be happy. Solid late night eats.

Eric Ya' Dingus... Subliminal Innocence Is Sublime

EricDingus_SISubliminal Innocence might be one of my favorite instrumental albums of this year so far, Eric Dingus is one heck of a producer and his latest projects that message very well. Dealing with depression and a plethora (Jefe, what is a plethora?) of influences from Japanese horror movies and video games, he managed to put it in dreamy audio form and it sounds fantastic. Ranging from subtle somber sounds to epic sounding neon lights streaking audio (Regrets 1995), the tracks mess with your ears while projecting images of torn worlds. It's great. Sometimes the bass is super heavy where if loud enough you feel everything vibrate and goes perfectly with the overall idea of the album. To think that in Austin, Texas 18yr old Eric Dingus is making beats like this... man you gotta love music.

I highly recommend downloading this free album and hope you completely zone out with Dingus 'cause he definitely knows what he's doing.

Elhae's 'Champagne Wishes' Living High

E_CWI've been talking about Elhae for a bit and as usual note how he keeps rising even more with each album release, with 'Champagne Wishes' it's no different and he's got a few major guests to round out the production. This time there's a good stir up in the force with features by Rick Ross, Tory Lanez and Gunplay from the Maybach Music Group, someone is definitely noticing what I've been saying all along. While I don't really have the MMG folks in my daily listens, I can appreciate it when it has some more soul to it and this is where 'Champagne Wishes' continues to emit it's radiancy. I enjoyed this album a good deal and happy to see that Elhae's elevation is focused and constant, it has moments of chill while some tracks you just wanna blast with the windows down as you ride. From All Away, Zonin', Gotta Live, Late Night Lights, Roc the Mic and Gold Rolex, this album has a certain sound that's specific to Elhae which helps confirm his space and sound he's going for.

When listening to Hip-Hop I've never been a fan of repetition with chorus chants, so 'Real Nigga' and 'I Want it All' fell a bit due to this but I can see how it fits into that type of track. He slightly shifted his sound into a heavier bass and high-class feel that's easily enjoyed, it doesn't come off Hova'ish (yep)... kudos on that. A 'Toast' to Elhae for constant elevation with brighter lights, keep pushing cause the work is paying off.

PremRock, Tom Waits and Hip-Hop... It Just Happened.

How things play out in life can be a little funny sometimes. Before I got notice of PremRock's Tom Waits re-imagining album I discussed the eclectic artist with a few people here, I tried to explain the sound or feeling you get when you hear a Tom Waits album. Needless to say it was pretty difficult without actually having a sit and listening, also answering the "what's wrong with this guy?" questions came and we laughed. Now enter PremRock... a well versed and traveling man of the Hip-Hop world, along with what I would think is a (underused) sample haven for beat makers and we have one hell of an interesting idea/album. When things could be a near suicidal (still great) or tv noise blaring atmosphere if left to Waits has taken an upbeat and highly enjoyable album that I can only wish Waits would enjoy as much as I did, PremRock's idea which might be his best yet bring the element of surprise and genuine interest that lacks in most present day releases. Retaining the Waits feel and adding a Hip-Hop touch was a great step, this re-imagining is filled with piano keys dancing around melodic beats and Premrock laying stories down as he does so well. There is a considerable amount of Hip-Hop out now that goes nowhere and follows some ghost movement that ends up dissipating as fast as it appears. Hope stays alive when you see a project that has some history to it and no weird hash tag team behind the music. I've been a fan of Premrock for a while and Tom Waits for a bit also, I can see a lot of work and love for music went into this. I stand 100% by this and repeat what Prem said himself "New Album Mark's Wild Years, get it."

The End Is Only the Beginning for WVM

Well this is a long overdue (cause I'm impatient) EP from WVM before he releases his album on the estimated Feb. 2013. I stumbled upon his Kickstarter on October 2011 and decided to support the artist because of what I heard and came out impressed with where his music was featured, with the bits and pieces being released up to this EP I have high hopes for the album and all involved. There are certain people contributing to this EP and album that caught my eye and those are Chris Vrenna (NIN, M. Manson) and Josh Freese (NIN, DEVO, Perfect Circle), me being a NIN and M. Manson fan before he went Holy Wood, it was an instant peak of interest. Freese drums and WVM vocals goes great together, at first I didn't think the voice of WVM would be ok with the semi electronic sound but no doubts now. The EP has that awesome static electronic punch I haven't enjoyed in a while, a crystal clear indication that this guy knows what he's doing and I'm not worried at all about the outcome of the album.
